Head Coach · 14-Blue National

Rachel Stine here, coaching 14-Blue National at CVA this season. The part I like best is setting. Being the quarterback of the court is a big responsibility. It’s the hardest mental position on the court. Understanding the flow of game and seeing what the other teams are doing, then putting the ball in the hands of the hitter with the highest percentage chance to score the next point. In my opinion the fun stuff! Ask me about the mental side and you'll get a while on that as well. I've spent a few seasons in the gym, five of them with this age group. Come watch a session. What happens in my gym says more than anything written here.

The way I handle a rough patch mid-set: it depends on the athlete, some need that instant feedback for what to do on the next ball, others need the question asked of “what do we do next?”. But my emphasis is always on the next ball/next point! A practice with me is lots of fundamental work but bring it all together and competing in the second half of practice!.

I played club volleyball 13-18’s, both indoor and sand in Florida! I was a high school varsity player for 3 years, 1 year as a serving specialist and 2 years as an OPP/setter. I can still demonstrate every rep I teach.

Not everyone fits how I work, and who tends to struggle is an athlete who doesn’t like direct feedback, someone who isn’t ready to be pushed past what they think they can do or think it’s going to be easy and an athlete/family who doesn’t understand playing time is earned not guaranteed. My position on playing time: I rotate widely early in the season, then tighten up mid/post season. Every athlete has a role and I’m clear about what that role is.

I’m not just coaching your athletes volleyball skills, it’s more than the sport - I’m teaching leadership, teamwork, respect, discipline, personal connection and more. There is one thing my athletes will not let go of: saying the same thing over and over or losing my train of thought mid sentence because I can get distracted easily!. Away from the gym: I’m a Pricing Manager in the aerospace industry! I price new projects for the company, maintain current pricing structure and process, and build market analytics to help grow current business.

If something's bothering you, don't sit on it. My door is always open to the athletes! If there is a question that can’t be answered between myself and the girls, parents are welcome to ask.
